“A day with…”, Milpitas, CA.

En 1999, Daniel ANIZON est hébergé à la Villa Montalvo dans la Silicon Valley en Californie. Artiste en résidence durant 6 semaines, il réalise quinze portraits d’habitants de cette ville de 65 000 habitants sortie de nulle part pendant le boom Internet. Le but était d’apporter une vision d’un photographe étranger sur cette mosaïque urbaine en plein développement et sans aucun ciment ethnique ou culturel.
Chaque matin, le photographe sonnait à la porte d’une des personnes sélectionnées et partait en voiture avec celle-ci pour l’accompagner jusqu’à son lieu de travail pour la journée. D’où le titre « Un jour avec… ».
La démarche retenue comportait deux volets : d’une part ont été réalisés avec un appareil classique des portraits avec les 15 habitants sélectionnés. D’autre part, ces mêmes personnes étaient filmées avec une caméra mini-DV permettant des arrêts sur image/portraits au cours desquels le son continue d’être pris pendant 7 secondes.
Ceci permet de confronter l’approche photographique, discontinue comme le montre la consultation d’une planche-contact, et le processus du film qui est le pendant en continu de celle-ci.
Une exposition comportant les tirages photographiques et le vidéo a été réalisée sur place à la suite de cette résidence.

This project is a result of a partnership between the Community Foundation Silicon Valley, Villa Montalvo artist residency program, the French Consulate in San Francisco, AFAA (Association Française d’Action Artistique), San Jose State University, the City of Milpitas and Milpita Alliance for Arts.
The purpose was to increase cultural participation of people living and working in Silicon Valley.
This research involved two artistic approaches. First, traditional photographic portraits were realized with 15 persons living in Milpitas and with whom Daniel ANIZON spent a day with each of them individually. Then, the same individuals were filmed with a mini-DV camera, a device that allows still pictures/portraits to be taken at the same time the sound continues to be recorded for 7 seconds.
The interest of this is to oppose the discontinuous photographic approach with the continuous process of the video.
A show of this work was organised afterwards, opposing the 2 approaches.
